Assessment Consultation
Whatever the presenting problem, it is always crucial that the therapist be afforded an opportunity to discuss the presenting difficulty and assess all other aspects of life generally with the patient in great detail and in the strictest of confidence. An unequivocal assurance in the area of confidentiality and a primary respect for the privacy and dignity of every patient are some of the hallmarks of any good Therapist. Each Assessment Consultation last for up to 2 hours and covers every aspect of life. At the conclusion of the Assessment Consultation a determination is made on the treatment path recommended to deal with the particular presenting problem. Every aspect of the treatment process is discussed at length and includes details of costs, homework and all other commitments involved. The patient is then discharged and allowed both time and space to consider all facets of the proposed therapy before s/he makes a decision on whether to proceed in to therapy.
The Therapy
The primary therapy on offer in the treatment of neuroses is the approach perfected by Des Canning; this is used to discover the deeply rooted causes of psychological problems. This is a science of CAUSE and EFFECT. By this is meant that for every psychosomatic EFFECT or symptom (depression, insomnia, migraine or whatever), there is usually a CAUSE. Psychoanalysis through the process of free association reveals and removes the CAUSE and consequently relieves the EFFECT (symptom). The relief is complete and lasting.
Every illness with which the General Practitioner has to deal is primarily organic, functional or psychosomatic in origin. In the latter two instances, the importance of mental and emotional attitudes is fully recognized but in the case of physical complaints, too little notice is often given to the extent to which these can be aggravated and prolonged by psychological factors. Mind and body can never be separated; each reacts on the other and this needs to be taken into account in every case.
