Therapy to help stop nail bitingNail Biting

Millions of people around the world suffer from a self-mutilating and often painful addiction to biting their nails, which can be harder to quit than smoking cigarettes, but is often overlooked as a relatively benign habit.

Medical experts are now taking a closer look at the addiction and have decided to change its classification from a mere habit to a full-fledged obsessive-compulsive disorder. This may sound extreme another aspect being missed though is that nail biting not unlike any psychological difficulty is a symptom of another underlying difficulty.

Nail BitingNail biting can be another self-soothing mechanism.

Nail biting has both physical and emotional consequences. Regularly biting your nails and cuticles can leave your fingers red and sore. The area of skin around your nails may bleed and become infected. Bacteria and viruses passed from your fingers to your face and mouth can make you vulnerable to infection.

Nail biting can also harm your teeth, leading to poorly aligned, weakened teeth.

The appearance of bitten-down fingernails can also be embarrassing, which can only add to anxiety and stress.
