Impotency
Psychological impotence is where erection or penetration fails due to thoughts or feelings (psychological reasons) rather than physical impossibility. It is more commonly known as Erectile Dysfunction (ED) characterized by the inability to develop or maintain an erection.
In younger males, the most frequent cause is anxiety – particularly nervousness about having sex, about causing a pregnancy or about using a condom.
- In middle aged men the common causes are seen as overwork, stress, guilt and bereavement where a man forms a new sexual relationship after the loss of a partner .Alcohol also can be a contributing factor, as can obesity.
- In post-middle aged men ED gets more common with increasing age. A high proportion of cases are caused by narrowing of the blood vessels, keeping blood pressure checked and cholesterol down helps combined with an adequate level of exercise, smoking also in a contributing factor.
Psychological causes form a significant influence on ED.
- Nerves especially about performing or pleasing a partner
- Guilt, if the relationship is outside of an existing relationship
- Relationship problems
- Doubts with sexual orientation
- Depression
- Exhaustion
